Our performance & some cool photos from the @williamsburgcharter variety show last night. Blessed to be an arts educator with this wonderful group ✨
I’m new to the school so growing the program has been slow going but I said let me throw my hat in the ring for the talent show.
The cheerleading coach and daytime dance teacher are both really wonderful and the cheer captain- a senior- is a doll, so they all supported me collaborating with their clubs which led to many of their students becoming my students as well.
Now we’re working on a dance team/ cheer squad/ step team mash up for Black History Month. It’s going to be something special!
I should also note that because many of the girls didn’t know I was hosting step practice they learned this choreography in 1-3 days when they realized Step was a thing and they wanted to be part of it lol. It definitely doesn’t look like they just learned this choreo!
THAT being said, Nurturing our kids natural talents with HIGH QUALITY, INTENTIONAL and CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE access to the arts rather than telling them ‘everyone can’t be a dancer/ singer/ rapper’ is really important. Yes there’s only one Beyonce, yes there’s only one Basquiat, but that doesn’t mean our young people can’t have successful, fulfilling and LUCRATIVE arts careers in everything from design, fashion, production, lighting and creative direction to hosting, curating, live music, choreographing, modeling, songwriting, cultural arts advocacy and more.
Every SINGLE field could use more folks who look like us and rep us with integrity (not respectability- there’s a difference!) It’s high time we start building on the confidence our children have based on the talents they naturally develop by being in community with one another in social settings rather than pushing them toward careers they may not love because we think they’re more ‘sensible.’ There are many paths to choose and those that require creativity are no less valuable! #Stepping #Dance #ArtsEducation #TeachingArtist #YouthAdvocacy #PerformingArts #TajhOnTour #DanceTeachersOfInstagram #CulturallyResponsiveTeaching #BlackGirlMagic #Beyonce #Homecoming #Majorette #NYCDancers #DanceIsLife
